News / Minden News #41: Donations, New Uniforms & Updated Schedule
« on: July 09, 2020, 01:04:52 pm »

Issue #41: "Sol omnibus lucet"

Donations!
Hello one and all, and welcome to the newest edition of Minden News.

We are once again asking for your financial support. Server upkeep is not free and we run quite a few servers for the regiment. It costs a great deal each month to host all of our game servers, the forum, and TeamSpeak. The regiment runs solely off donations and any support is greatly appreciated. Our Patreon patrons receive special benefits, a full list of which may be found on our Patreon page. Our donation links can be found below:

Patreon - *Patrons receive special benefits!
PayPal

Please consider donating to the regiment, we would very much appreciate it.

New Regiment Registry
The most recent Holdfast update has introduced a regiment registry to the game, this means you can sign up and be listed as a member of of a regiment via the main menu. As such, if you have not already done so, sign up to the 51st Regiment of Foot as soon as possible!

Another feature included in this update is regiment levelling and regiment leaderboards. This means the more our members play on public servers, the more XP we accrue over time and the higher we get on the leaderboards! So get playing on public servers and boost our XP and popularity!

Updated Event Schedule
For those of you who don't already know, our current schedule of events has changed slightly.

Game Night has switched from Saturday to Friday and we now have two linebattle events every Saturday. Friday Game Night and the first Saturday linebattle begin at the standard time of 20:00 CEST / 2:00 EDT. Whereas, the second Saturday linebattle is a NA event and begins at 02:00 CEST / 8:00 PM EDT. Everyone is welcome and attendance is encouraged!

These changes to the event schedule are reflected in the 'Current Schedule' section at the end of this article.

Rollout of New Uniforms!
Just a small update on the status of our custom uniforms. As many of you already know, our new uniforms have been steadily rolling out and undergoing minute changes over the last week or so. The current line infantry and NCO skins are now fully completed. In addition, the Officer class is now mostly complete but has been undergoing small changes. However, it doesn't end there, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more custom content appearing in the near future.

Supporting the Regiment & New Recruits
We appreciate all the extra work and help our members put in for the clan, whether that consists of recruiting members, donating to the clan or creating guides for mods for everyone to use.

Congratulations are in order for Corporal VectorScope, who recently has been putting in phenomenal work for the regiment and was recently promoted for his efforts. More members who received noteworthy promotions recently are Chosen Man Maximo 420, who is now our first and currently only Chosen Man in the regiment, Lieutenant Jamster, who has been a core member for a few years now, and Kingsman Average, who only joined earlier this year but has been regularly attending events. All of these people have been putting plenty of time and effort into the regiment since they joined. Congratulations to all mentioned, well deserved!
Remember, hard work and commitment is recognised and rewarded!

Lastly, I would like to extend cordial greetings to all of our new recruits and privates that have joined us recently!
Be sure to get to know everyone by attending events, playing other games with us, or just spending some time chatting on TeamSpeak or Discord.

News / Minden News #40: D-Day 76, 1v1 Tournaments & More!
« on: June 06, 2020, 02:18:06 pm »

Issue #40: "V"

D-Day 76 - "The sooner you people get off the beach, the sooner they'll stop this blasted shelling."
June 1944. Operation Neptune and associated airborne operations such as Operation Tonga and Operation Mallard sought to begin what would be Operation Overlord, or the invasion of Normandy. With the first British airborne troops landing just before midnight on the 5th, the majority of British and American airborne troops landed by parachute and glider in the very early morning on the 6th to capture bridges, towns and other strategic points ahead of the sea landings. The main seaborne fleet, made up of 80% Royal Navy vessels, 16% American and 4% other allies, had amassed at an area aptly named "Piccadilly Circus" south of the Isle of Wight early in the morning and steamed onwards on towards the French coastline.

At 05:00, HMS Warspite had the honour of firing the first rounds, the voice of her six 15-inch guns thundered with the aim of softening up the German defences for the landing force. After hours of aerial bombing and heavy naval bombardment, the Americans along with British support landed first at Utah Beach at 06:25. Americans with British, Canadian and Free French troops landed at Omaha Beach minutes later at 06:30. Followed less than an hour later at 07:25 with British and Free French forces landing at Sword Beach where they met the only Panzer Division resistance of the Normandy landings. British forces landed less than ten minutes later at 07:35 at Gold and finally the Canadians and British landed at Juno Beach at 07:55.

It was the largest amphibious assault ever seen with and paved the way for the invasion into Fortress Europe.
The Channel may have stopped Hitler's plans for Britain in 1940, but it didn't stop Britain and her Allies in 1944.

RESULTS - 1v1 Melee Tournament!
On a lighter note, the melee 1v1 internal melee tournament went ahead and it was a huge success. A huge well done to everyone who participated, it was a commendable effort by all. Hopefully all who took part enjoyed it. Honourable mention goes to Grenadier Company. Their reputation precedes itself, Gren. Coy. members were on top form and they performed very well.

Particular congratulations and felicitations go to the three big winners of the tournament:

• 1st place/Overall winner - Guardsman James_Stukov - Awarded Guardsman rank
• Most Improved Enlisted - Grenadier Acez - £10 Steam voucher
• Overall good performance - Grenadier dengland777 - Invited to Grenadier Company

Regardless of how well you did in the final result, we hope you enjoyed the tournament and hopefully you took away something to improve on for next time a tournament comes along.

Upcoming Rocket League 1v1 Tournament!
Lance Corporal Seaside, Lance Corporal VectorScope and Regular Ecko have been devising and organising a 1v1 tournament in Rocket League. The tournament will take place a week from now on Saturday 13th June at 19:00 BST/20:00 CEST. It will be in the style of a double elimination 1v1, meaning if you lose your first match, you'll get another attempt to prove your worth before being knocked out fully. There's a prize for the 1st place winner of a Heatwave skin for Rocket League worth ~€20. More prizes will be added for 2nd and 3rd place when more participants sign up.

To summarise:
• Tournament takes place on Saturday 13th June at 19:00 BST/20:00 CEST
• 1v1 double elimination style tournament.
• Prize for 1st place, with more prizes being added as more join the tournament.
• Open to anyone, no criteria.
• Sign up via the challonge link here.

Any further questions about the tournament can be directed towards either Seaside or VectorScope.

Recruitment & new TeamSpeak badges!
A big thank you to all the recent recruiting efforts by all. We appreciate any and all new recruits that enter our ranks. To show our appreciation for efforts made by our top recruiters, we will be introducing TeamSpeak badges for the top three recruiters for each month.

The top three recruiters (by number of recruited members) for the month of May are as follows:

Lance Corporal HubblyBubbly: 9 recruits
Lance Corporal VectorScope: 8 recruits
Regular George: 4 recruits

Do like our top recruiters and get recruiting! More recruits means bigger and better events!

Modding Support and 51st Uniforms
Modding support for Holdfast has been added in a recent update. This will make for more varied gameplay with hopefully new linebattle, siege and naval maps being added for use in events down the line, as seen with the Helm's Deep map on our Siege event on Tuesday. Modding support allows us to create custom mods for the regiment such as uniforms and colours. Progress on our 51st Regiment of Foot uniforms is coming along nicely as you can see in the teaser image provided by VectorScope on the left of this article. A mod for our own 51st Regimental Colours is also in the works and you may be seeing it soon.

If anyone is inclined to work on mods, feel free! More mods means more variation and makes for interesting gameplay!

Current Schedule:
Monday — Naval Battle — 20:00 CEST / 2:00 PM EDT
Tuesday — Siege — 20:00 CEST / 2:00 PM EDT
Wednesday — Training — 20:00 CEST / 2:00 PM EDT

Issue #39: "Quality is not an act, it is a habit."

75th Anniversary of VE Day! - "They gave their lives that others might have freedom"
As readers of the Minden News may know, the 8th of May is VE Day and this years was the 75th anniversary of VE Day. VE Day (or Victory in Europe Day) commemorates the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945, marking the end of the Second World War in the European Theatre. This was a momentous and joyous occasion for the European peoples, including those from neutral nations, who had endured total war since 1939. However it was marred with sadness for some, with numerous lives lost over the course of the previous six years.

Many of us being Europeans, we tend to overlook the fact that there was further fighting well after VE Day against Japan in the Pacific, whom at this point remained unsubdued, until late 1945.
Whilst the Americans and Australians were tackling the Philippines, the United Kingdom and Empire forces, along with Dutch and American troops, tightened their grip on Borneo.

We tend to overlook the Burma Campaign to an even greater extent, where the United Kingdom and her Empire, along with American, Republican Chinese and Burmese-allied troops continued their struggle against Japanese and Free Indian forces until late 1945. The British Fourteenth Army's nickname, The Forgotten Army, is a prime example of how the contemporary news sources overlooked the Burma Campaign in favour of the developing situation in the Pacific.

INTERNAL 51st 1V1 MELEE TOURNAMENT
Want to compete in a regimental melee event for fun? Fancy yourself a melee player and want to prove your worth? Or maybe you just want to win prizes and bragging rights?

The 51st will be holding a melee tournament within the regiment, which will be taking place the end of this month on Friday 29th May at 20:30 BST/21:30 CEST!
The tournament will be in the style of a 'world cup', this means there will be a Group Stage with groups of 4 players, the top 2 players of each group will go through to elimination style rounds until a winner is crowned. This tournament is open to everyone in the regiment, regardless of rank or company. In addition, there will be prizes given to participants. The Overall Winner will receive the coveted Guardsman rank, the most improved enlisted will receive a £10 Steam voucher and invitations to Grenadier Company may be given to those who show exemplary melee skills throughout the tournament.

To summarise:
• Tournament takes place on Friday 29th May at 20:30 BST/21:30 CEST
• Group Stage will consist of 4-man groups.
• Top 2 players in each group will progress to elimination stages.
• Anyone in the regiment can participate.
• Sign up via the challonge link here.

Prizes are as such:
• 1st place/Overall winner - Guardsman Rank
• Most Improved Enlisted - £10 Steam Voucher
• Invitations into Grenadier Company - Based off performance

Any further questions about the tournament can be directed towards any NCO or Officer.

Issue #37: "The sword is the axis of the world and its power is absolute."

GRENADIER COMPANY HAS ARRIVED - "Company will fix bayonets!"
The 51st Regiment of Foot has a reputation for melee; We see it as an integral skill to train and we pride ourselves on being one of the best melee regiments in the Holdfast community.
Our attitude and commitment to training melee means many of our players have a good grasp of the melee system in Holdfast and some have even won tournaments in the past.

As such, we are finally rolling out changes to Grenadier Company.

Grenadier Company will be the regiment's elite melee company, of which the best melee players in the regiment will form the backbone. However, anyone who is Regular or above may apply. To decide which players make the cut, there will be a short application process to join Grenadier Company. As part of the application process, there will be a melee assessment to test your melee ability. This will be arranged for a time when both applicant and assessor are available. In addition, there will be intra-clan tournaments every 2-3 months to decide the best melee player within Grenadier Company and the winner(s) will be granted the prestigious rank of Guardsman. Keep in mind that these ranks distinguish members by their skill level, not by their seniority.

You can make an application to join Grenadier Company via this forum thread.

Furthermore, all current Grenadiers and Guardsmen will be given the new rank of Kingsman, which will serve as the senior enlisted rank within Centre Company. The rank of Kingsman will be held by experienced veterans who have consistently shown exemplary performance in linebattles and other events. The rank of Grenadier will be granted to those accepted into Grenadier Company, as was previously the case.

Finally, we are introducing a new rank called Chosen Man. Those members who are not a part of Grenadier Company, but who have shown great dedication and loyalty to the regiment will be granted this exclusive rank. This rank it is meant for those who have consistently attended events and, in addition, have proven themselves to be invaluable members of the regiment. This is now the highest rank an enlisted member can achieve in Centre Company and Artillery Company, and is equivalent to the rank of Guardsman.

As such, the highest enlisted ranks in the regiment are now Chosen Man and Guardsman. The second highest rank is Kingsman, followed by Grenadier.

To summarise:
• Minimum rank of Regular to apply for Grenadier Company.
• Melee assessment on application.
• Intra-clan dual tournaments every 2-3 months to decide the Guardsmen.
• Those accepted into Grenadier Company will still be given the Grenadier rank.
• Apply via the forum thread.
• All current Grenadiers and Guardsmen are granted the new rank of Kingsman, which is now the second-highest enlisted rank after Chosen Man and Guardsman.
• A new rank has been introduced called Chosen Man. It is equivalent to the Guardsman rank and is the highest rank a member can achieve in Centre Company and Artillery Company.

For those who feel they are not good enough for Grenadier Company, know that it isn't completely out of reach.
See membership of Grenadier Company as a challenge to conquer and strive to get better - practise makes perfect!

If you want to improve your melee skills outside of structured training sessions, we encourage you to play on public melee servers.
Beginners or those who want to master the basics can have a look at our 0.41 Melee Combat Guide.

ARTILLERY COMPANY HAS ARRIVED - "All guns commence firing!"
The 51st Regiment of Foot has a wide pool of talent. There are many skills to hone in Holdfast and we pride ourselves on having talented members that excel at many of these skills. During particular linebattles or siege events, some members are required to operate cannons and/or rockets. To support our line infantry in the field, the 51st Regiment of Foot requires a dedicated team of Artillerymen to provide a firing solution to the artillery question.

To satisfy this requirement, Artillery Company has been established and is seeking members.

Artillery Company is a support company, meaning it will provide support to our lines of infantry during linebattles and other events. Artillery Company will be comprised of members of Centre Company who excel at playing Cannoneer, Rocketeer or Sapper. As such, the the most experienced members of the regiment in those areas will have the opportunity to be accepted into the ranks.
Artillery Company will have a short application process to decide who is deemed capable enough to represent the regiment. The candidate requirements are that you must be Regular or above, be competent in the use of cannons, and be competent in use of the Sapper class. As previously stated, Artillery Company will be recruiting members directly from Centre Company, meaning you cannot be a member of Grenadier Company if you wish to apply.

You can make an application to join Artillery Company via this forum thread.

As Artillery Company is a support company, members will maintain their Centre Company ranks. There will be no changes to ranks for those of you who decided to join the artillery crew.

To summarise:
• Members will remain part of Centre Company.
• Minimum rank of Regular to apply for Artillery Company.
• Artillery competency test on application.
• Must not be a member of Grenadier Company.
• Centre Company ranks will be maintained.
• Apply via the forum thread.

For those who may be interested in Artillery Company, get practising and hone your gunnery skills.
When you feel you're up to the standard, you may apply via the thread and perchance you might earn your place as an artilleryman.

News / Minden News #36: Saint Valentine's Day
« on: February 14, 2020, 09:01:11 pm »

Issue #36: "If music be the food of love, play on"

Saint Valentine's Day
As you may know, February 14th is the feast day of Saint Valentine, a Roman saint and martyr that lived in the 3rd Century AD.

Famously, Saint Valentine has been the patron saint of love and courtship since the High Middle Ages (and less famously, patron saint of epilepsy). He was a Christian clergyman and ministred secretly to the Christians in Rome during the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. Valentine was ultimately imprisoned, later to be condemned to death. He refused to apostatise and he beaten with wooden clubs and pelted with stones before being beheaded. However on a brighter note, presently for most people Valentine's Day is a more secular holiday that is celebrated by lovers and couples around the world.
So here's to all you romantics out there, hopeless or otherwise.

0.41 Melee Guide
Esteemed melee player and Switzer Grenadier James Stukov has produced a Melee Guide for Holdfast's 0.41 update for your reading pleasure.
The Melee Guide has some great tips for beginners and improvers alike, so get reading if you haven't already.
Thanks to Stukov for producing this guide for us.

Discord and Challenges
For those who haven't already heard, Corporal Tachang has revamped our Discord Server!
Tachang has put in a lot of work into developing the Discord, creating "Challenges" and "Hardcore Challenges" for members to achieve.
Thanks to Tachang for all his work for the Discord.

Have YOU been mentioned in despatches?
As always, a big welcome to the recruits and privates that have joined us in the last month!
Be sure to spend time on the Teamspeak, Discord and get involved in game nights with other members.

Issue #34: God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen

Seasons Greetings & Winding Down
Firstly, allow me to extend warm seasons greetings to all members of the regiment!
As it's almost Christmas, some events will be winding down for the next few weeks. As such, there have been changes to our event schedule. The Monday Naval is on hiatus for three weeks and will be returning the first Monday in January. The Tuesday Training & Siege event will be taking a break on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Lastly, the Thursday Linebattle event will be skipping a week on 26/12/19 as it will fall on Saint Stephen's Day/Boxing Day.
Our current event schedule will be posted at the bottom of this edition of Minden News™.

Cavalry Update - "Now, Scots Greys! Now!"
For those of you who don't know, word on the street is that the cavalry update is at hand and should be dropping very soon™. For those who weren't there, our last Sunday event was played on the beta branch which featured the new cavalry classes. The general consensus was that cavalry classes are a refreshing addition to the game with great potential for linebattles. Let us know if you agree or disagree or what your thoughts on cavalry are!

Upcoming 1v1 Melee Tournament
Lance Corporal Tachang is organising (albeit, accidentally) the largest ever melee tournament in Holdfast to date.
Here are the details for those interested:

• 64-players total.
• Single Elimination (Knockout) Style.
• Commencing @ 4:00pm GMT on Sunday 22/12/19.
• Competed on 2 servers hosted by the 51st.
• Open to anyone wishing to participate.
• Only requirement is that you will need to be rated by Elf so you're on the EU tier chart.

Tournament Discord - https://discord.gg/rKPHTUr
Tournament sign-up - https://challonge.com/tournaments/signup/pSZaGzJ6dq

Currently, there's no prize pool but donations towards one are welcome.
One of the servers will be streamed on https://www.twitch.tv/bigmamba/ but a streamer is still being sought for the second server.
Anyone who wants further details or would like to donate or help stream the event - feel free to message Tachang!

New Blood & Recent Promotions
Lastly, we welcome all of our recent recruits, we're glad to have you on board! In addition, thank you to all of our recruiters, honourable mention goes to Grenadier HubblyBubbly. Do like HubblyBubbly and get recruiting! Service guarantees citizenship promotion! Speaking of promotions, congratulations to all who have received promotions in the interim since the last Minden News™ to now, well deserved.
